Young wrestlers painted white with ash are fighting
for the honor. Various minority races living in Nuba
Mountains in central Sudan are generically known
as Nuba. It is, a little bit exaggerated though, said
that each tribe is living in 99 mountains.

スーダン中部のヌバ山地に暮らす少数民族は
「ヌバ」と総称される。「99の山に別々の
言語を操る部族が住む」といわれるほど
多様な部族が共存している。
ヌバ文化の代表例レスリングでは、体中に灰を
塗った男たちが全身をぶつけて別の村の相手を
なぎ倒し、称賛と名誉を得る。

a few foreign NGOs’, like Médecins Sans Frontieres.
Many Nuba people die due to diarrhoea or
infection which could be cured with proper treatment.
Some have to walk all the way to the NGO’s hospital with
carrying patients, even if it takes a couple of nights.

of beauty. The central government tried
to forbid this practice during the Africa’s longest
conflict which lastedmore than two decades until
the beginning of 2005. Suchunique customs
are disappearing at an alarming rate.

身体装飾。しかし、20年以上続いたアフリカ最長
の内戦の影響で、こういった独自の文化が

for scarce wells. In addition, they are extremely
busy with other housework, like child-rearing,

夏には頼りの井戸も枯渇し、限られた水
を求め丸一日歩き回ることもしばしば。

after the end of the Africa’s longest conflict,
school children work hard at their military lessons.
During the conflict, children could not go studying
because all school were destroyed or closed. Today
some pupil who are in their 20s study with other
children. Fifth-Grader Yousif, 23, says, “We have no
enough text or pencil, but I’ll work hard to be a doctor.”

小学校がすべて破壊、もしくは閉鎖された
ため最近通い始めた20代の若者もいる。
5年生のユスフさん(23)は「教科書も鉛筆も
足りない。でも医者になるために
勉強に励むんだ」と意気込む。

and anti-government group(SPLA), SPLA soldiers
at last visited a village which used to be controlled
by the government.

和平合意後、中央政府の管理地域だった
村の実質支配権がようやく住民の大半が
支持する反政府勢力側に移った。

custom– hating and avoiding twins – is disappearing,
it is said that some twins were killed with their
parents by the people in some areas not long before.

In Sudan, people have experienced two
conflicts in recent years; one is Africa’s longest
conflict, claiming more than 1.5 million lives;
the other is the on-going Darfur conflict, called
the world’s worst current humanitarian crisis by
the UN. Today, except the supports from foreign
NGOs, there is no financial resource to reestablish
the foundations of the societies destroyed, such as
infrastructure, medical care, education and culture.
夕暮れのヌバ山地。スーダンの人々
は、20年余りに及び150万人以上の命
を奪った内戦に加え、同国西部ダルフール
での「世界最悪の人道危機」（アナン国連事務総長）
といわれる内戦を同時に経験している。
現時点ではノルウェーなど外国NGOの
わずかな支援を除き、あらゆる方面
（インフラ、医療、教育、文化など）において、
地域の基盤を整備するための収入源は皆無だ。
